Test & Measurement

Whether you are measuring in remote locations, specialized sound labs, recording studios or anything in between, Earthworks has a measurement microphone to fit your needs. Our Measurement Microphones capture and reproduce the original sound with unmatched accuracy and clarity. They have virtually no handling noise and are remarkably stable with respect to temperature and atmospheric conditions.

Time-Domain & Frequency Response

Earthworks microphones are accurate in the time domain and frequency response. The higher frequency response of our microphones affects what we hear in the audible range, furthering the accurate reproduction of your sound. Our microphones also have a ruler flat frequency response, so they will uniformly tranduce all frequencies, adding no coloration. And a near perfect phase response results in proper time alignment of your signals.

Impulse Response

Earthworks measurement microphones are optimized for clean, very fast impulse performance to provide accurate wideband response. We have learned after many measurements and careful listening that the true impulse response of microphones is a better indicator of sound quality than is frequency amplitude response. Microphones with long and non-symmetrical impulse performance will be more colored than those with short impulse tails. To illustrate this point we have carefully recorded a variety of sources using two different omni models (Earthworks QTC1 and another well-known model) both of which have flat frequency response to 40kHz within -1dB. With an incredibly fast impulse response, our microphones capture and reproduce your sound with all the subtle details and nuances exactly as you are hearing it.

Polar Pattern

M50 Polar PatternWith a near perfect omnidirectional polar pattern, our Measurement Microphones do not become directional at higher frequencies. In addition, the small diaphragm provides an accurate omnidirectional pattern with an even coherent response at the direct and off-axis sections of the microphone capsule.
