Robin DiMaggio

DiMaggio relies on Earthworks microphones to accurately capture his sound, and especially appreciates the natural response and accurate response patterns. He remembers how it felt when he first received his DFK1 Drum FullKit™ System and his DK50/R: “When I saw them and opened them, I knew they were the goods. It’s as if you wake up on Christmas morning and somebody puts a Maserati right in your driveway. Aesthetically, these mics are beautiful and when you listen back, they sound spectacular.” Click here for more.

George Duke

George Duke, a highly accomplished session player and versatile touring musician, has performed with a diverse range of artists including Frank Zappa, Anita Baker, Al Jarreau, Jean-Luc Ponty, and many others. Duke has always found accurate sonic reproduction of the piano challenging, given the instrument’s wide frequency range and complex harmonic characteristics. This has been true particularly in live settings:  “I wanted a microphone that could consistently reproduce the quality of the piano, while producing an acceptable amount of gain at the same time.” Click here for more.

Eisley

Eisley was formed in 1997 in their bedroom after youngest sibling, Stacy, wrote their first song at age 8. They performed their first show in Spring ‘98, grew in local coffee house/rock venue, played 100’s of shows as unsigned indie for 4 years (‘98 – ‘02) in Texas, found and audience in Dallas’s Deep Ellum crowd about the time Sunny Day Real Estate released their 4th record. With a hand full of inspiring songs, new management and great press from music critics in the burgeoning Dallas scene, the young indie-pop group released their debut EP on Record Collection (Mike Mogis produced), signed with Warners, jumped on Coldplay’s Rush of Blood tour and began carving out a national following. Click here for more.

Anton Fig

“Earthworks were recommended to me by a friend and I instantly liked their sound. Very crisp and natural sounding. Unlike some larger mics that color the sound as it rolls around in the capsules, the small diaphragm Earthworks gives a clarity and unfiltered translation of the sounds in the room.” Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Anton began playing drums at age four. After performing in numerous successful local rock bands, he moved to Boston to further pursue his musical interests. Click here for more.

Steve Gadd

At the very start of the James Taylor tour, well-respected front of house engineer David Morgan told Gadd about Earthworks’ drum mics. Morgan, who has a stellar track record in his own right, was already a fan of Earthworks PianoMic™, calling it “the most beautiful piano system I’ve ever used.” In his second life as a journalist, Morgan also had written enthusiastic reviews about both the PianoMic™ and the Drum FullKit™. As a friend and a trusted professional, Morgan insisted that Gadd give them a try on the James Taylor tour. Click here for more.

Dave Grusin

One of the top ten film scorers of his generation, Dave Grusin is possibly even more renowned as a jazz artist and founder of the prestige independent record company GRP. A piano graduate of the University of Colorado in 1956, he grew up with a classical music background, his father, Henri Grusin, having been a professional violinist. His first break in show business came as musical director for Andy Williams, playing piano on a string of singles and more than a half dozen of the singer’s best-selling albums. Click here for more.

John Harris

With an audience of approximately 25.8 million viewers, this year’s Grammy Awards telecast was the music industry’s biggest night of the year and many of the musical performances were equally huge. Pink’s aerial artistry was over the top, the Black Eyed Peas shook the foundation of the Staples Center, and the 3D tribute to Michael Jackson was in a league all its own. While perhaps at opposite ends of the musical spectrum, the performances of Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli and that of Leon Russell with the Zac Brown Band were both highlights of the evening. Each performance featured striking piano accompaniment and in both cases, the piano sound was captured using the PM40 PianoMic™ System from Earthworks. Click here for more.

Ken Hatfield

“For recording sessions, I always carry a matched pair of QTC40s to mic my guitar. When I first began doing this, engineers usually responded with a frown, so I had to assure them that my QTC40s would give them a great acoustic guitar sound from the get-go, or we could switch back to their favorite mics. After doing this on hundreds of record dates, no one ever changed the mics after they heard how great the QTC40s sound.” Click here for more.

Bruce Hornsby

Recognized the world over for the spontaneity and creativity of his live performances, pianist/vocalist, and songwriter Bruce Hornsby’s music draws from a blend of classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock influences to form a musical signature that is uniquely his own. Whether he’s performing solo, with Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette as The Bruce Hornsby Trio, or with his band, the Noisemakers, the multi-Grammy® Award winning artist’s piano-centric sound is highly identifiable—thanks, in part, to Earthworks’ acclaimed PM40 PianoMic™ System. Carter McLean

“Earthworks mics have the detail and clarity I need in the studio and on stage. I have never heard my instruments sound this REALl!!!! AMAZING.” Carter McLean was born in San Francisco California in 1978 and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. Today living in NYC he has been exposed to every style possible. Click here for more.

Andrew McMahon of Jack’s Mannequin

The task of miking an acoustic piano is never easy and the issue only compounds itself when it comes to live sound reinforcement. Duct tape never seems to hold throughout the performance while mic stands get bumped and, in the process, so does the piano sound. Add in ambient noise from the crowd, stage, and surrounding instruments and, from there, it’s frequently a downhill slide. That’s precisely why Andrew McMahon, pianist and lead vocalist for Jack’s Mannequin, relies on the Earthworks PM40 PianoMic™ System to capture the true essence of his piano sound. Click here for more.

Anthony Michelli

“If you love the sound of your instrument and want to preserve that sound live and on record, Earthworks microphones are the ticket! They accurately capture the true, clear and uncolored sound of my instruments in all applications.” Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and currently based in Toronto, Anthony has been involved in music since a very young age. Having played the accordion, and then alto and tenor saxophones but being driven by the ever present urge to want to play drums from the very beginning, he built his own drum set and played from ear. Click here for more.

Carlos Novais

Carlos Novais was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. At age 8 he started playing the piano sporadically, but after listening to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Queen, at age 14, he fell in love with the electric guitar. After recording and performing with many bands, he became interested in making albums, as an engineer. He started working in a studio when he was 20 years old, while still working as a musician. Soon he was asked to mix the bands he recorded, live. Click here for more.

Jason Palmer

“My live Earthworks set up consists of two configurations.  I use the DK25/L for smaller club type situations and for larger venues and recording I use the CMK5 kit along with the DK25/L.  I most recently used the CMK5 and DK25/L on the Sam Mosley record entitled ‘The Whole World’s Still got the Blues’. The first time I actually used any Earthworks mics was on a live funk/fusion club gig.  I used the DK25/L setup.” Click here for more.

Michael Prowda & Pete Keppler

Industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails (NIИ) recently completed an extensive world tour that began April 20th, 2009 in West Palm Beach, FL and extended throughout the United States, Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Rim—playing venues ranging in capacity from 5,000 to 25,000. In all, the storied band performed 74 shows in 64 cities—with the final eleven concerts, known officially as the Wave Goodbye tour, marking the conclusion of the band’s existence. Through it all, the larger-than-life drum sound of Ilan Rubin’s DrumKit™ can be credited to the stellar performance of microphones from the Earthworks catalog. Click here for more.

Hernan Romero

“On the road or in the studio…crystal clear sound essential to my music.” Spiced with the exotic traditions that infuse flamenco-gypsy, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean folk interwoven with textures of classical, jazz, and Latin rhythms, composer and guitarist Hernan Romero’s music is both sophisticated and accessible. It is sensuous, passionate, romantic and inescapably infectious. Inspired by the music of his family from his earliest memory, Romero became part of their performing ensemble by the age of four. Click here for more.

Wally Schnalle

“I had heard so many positive comments regarding Earthworks microphones, as drum overheads that I thought it was time to check them out. After contacting Earthworks they responded quickly and I got a few mics to check out. After spending a day in the studio checking out different configurations, placements and comparing them to my old mic set up I had to convince myself that what I was hearing was real. The clarity of my cymbals was night and day.” Click here for more.

Brian Speiser

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who together form the folk rock duo the Indigo Girls, are on tour again. With a busy schedule that includes appearances in venues such as the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, CA, the Lincoln Center Performance Hall in Fort Collins, CO, and the House of Blues in Dallas, TX, this is one act that requires every last piece of equipment to perform dependably and deliver consistent results. When it comes to miking their acoustic guitars, nothing is left to chance. That’s precisely why they rely on their Periscope™  Series P30/C microphones from Earthworks. Click here for more.

Gino Vannelli

“One of the greatest obstacles to achieving a full impact sound on an acoustic piano during a live performance has always been: a good solid level, along with an even and musical sound. It seems the two have always been exclusive of each other, until the Earthworks PianoMic™ came along. Of course, so much still depends on the engineer, but there isn’t much even the best sound man can do about limited level and feedback most microphones, even notoriously great ones can offer. The PianoMic™ has broken through this worn-out tradition and made possible the attainment of both high output and a quality sound. I now find it to be an indispensable tool on the concert stage.” Click here for more.

Ronnie Vannucci of The Killers

Vannucci first became acquainted with Earthworks’ High Definition Microphones™ using the DK25/L (2 overheads and 1 kick drum mic). In fact, he used these mics extensively on The Killers’ last studio album, Day and Age. He also used an Earthworks SR30/HC on a chorus section he recorded in the back of a bus for “Joy Ride,” a track off the same album. Since then, Vannucci has extended his use of Earthworks’ mics into many other areas—both in live performance and the studio, never looking back. Click here for more.

Rufus Wainwright

We chose to use the Earthworks PM40T with Rufus Wainwright because we needed a mic that would be natural sounding, detailed and sympathetic to the various playing styles that Rufus incorporates during his show.  We tried several mics and piano miking systems and instantly felt that the PM40 to be the best. It’s versatility, speed and simplicity to set up, regardless of what piano you use was an added bonus. The show being a solo performance, both voice and piano are laid bare for the audience to see or in actuality, hear. Click here for more.

Randy Waldman

“The PM40 delivers even, natural sound across the entire range of the instrument, and since I can close the lid, there’s considerably less of the usual bleed from other instruments on stage. Equally noteworthy, I never have to worry about the mics falling into the piano. I also get plenty of positive feedback from the sound crews when they hear the system for the first time. Their comments are almost always the same, ‘You can hear the entire piano keyboard evenly.’ The PM40 is a really well thought out system for piano miking.” Click here for more.
