How Earthworks Microphones Came to Be

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Earthworks Audio was originally founded to design and manufacture audiophile loudspeakers. David Blackmer’s goal when starting the company was to make the best sounding speakers on the planet. His enjoyment of music was a true passion. His philosophy to achieve this goal involved many principals in science and art. When the journey began, David used measurement tools that were accepted to be the world standard. After the first few steps he realized that the measurements he was getting were not as good as he believed they could be. He analyzed these tools carefully and realized that new standards would be necessary if he were to even come close to achieving the results he knew were possible.

The first tool he designed to this new standard was an omnidirectional microphone. This led to the manufacture the OM1. David now thought that he could get back to designing his “dream” loudspeaker. His colleagues, however, persuaded him to design other microphones and preamplifiers. These products would soon set a new world standard for realism in the art of recording music. While the years passed and these new microphones and preamplifiers were being manufactured, David constantly worked on his goal of designing the best sounding loudspeaker for true audiophiles. He assembled and groomed a team of real world oriented people with the same goals and dedication to achieving these goals. Created in beautiful hand selected solid Cherry panels, the Earthworks Sigma 6.2 was the end result of many years of research.

While we no longer make the loudspeakers, the scientific and artistic principles that David first envisioned when the journey began can still be seen in our microphones. Our microphones are able to capture and reproduce a soundstage so deep and wide that if you close your eyes you can “see” the music in front of you. Microphones that present transients so smooth you can feel the rosin on the bow as it plays across the violin. The unique design allows the timbre of all instruments to be translated so accurately that your “sixth” sense creates their presence right in front of you.

“After performing on the 2011 Grammys with Barbra Streisand this past weekend, the one comment I keep hearing over and over, is that the piano sounded so great and crystal clear. That’s why I use the Earthworks PianoMic…especially when 26 million people are listening!” – Randy Waldman

A Roundup of Our Week in Anaheim at NAMM 2011

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

We landed last night back in New Hampshire after a week in sunny Southern California and were welcomed with about a 70 degree drop in temperature and lots of snow. But the warm weather wasn’t the best part of our week in Anaheim. It was the NAMM show! We had tons of people come to the booth, both old friends and new. Yamaha was kind enough to let us use one of their pianos in our booth with our PM40 PianoMic™. We had it hooked up with our ZDT 1022 preamp and had some headphones plugged in so you could hear the PianoMic. We started everyone with the lid open and they were impressed. But then we’d close the lid completely and that’s when they couldn’t believe their ears or their eyes. If you haven’t had a chance to hear the PianoMic, scroll down to the listen section of the PianoMic page and hear it for yourself.

We also had lots of our endorsement artists stop by and answer questions, play the piano and take lots of pictures. Randy Waldman, Patrick Copper and James Raymond all played the piano while attendees got to listen to the PianoMic. We also had Anthony Michelli, Robin DiMaggio, Anthony King, Carlos Novais, Henry Hey and Carlos Skinfill stop by and hang out.

We also brought along our new vocal mic, the SR40V, which got a lot of positive feedback from everyone who got to try it out. It has been in development for a year and will be getting released in the next few months.

Finally, we debuted our new logo and look. There was reflex blue everywhere! We got all new banners made and had a slideshow with videos and all of our products on the big screen.

Here are a few pictures from the show. Check out all of our NAMM pictures on our Facebook page.

David Blackmer Awarded AES Fellowship in 1976

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

David Blackmer, the founder of Earthworks and dbx, joined a short list of engineers when he was awarded an Audio Engineering Society Fellowship at the 64th Convention in 1976. The Fellowship was awarded to David Blackmer “because of his many contributions to the science of audio signal processing and noise reduction.”

According to AES, “the Fellowship Award is given to a member who had rendered conspicuous service or is recognized to have made a valuable contribution to the advancement in or dissemination of knowledge of audio engineering or in the promotion of its application in practice.”
